# International bed & duvet size chart

A UK king is not a US king, and a European duvet may not be the size you expect. Pick a bed size to see it in centimetres and inches, its usual bedding, and the nearest size in every other country.

## How to use the chart, and why sizes clash

**Convert a bed size:** choose the country and the name on your bed or mattress. You see its size in both units, the bedding usually sold for it there, and the closest mattress in each other system. "Same size" means within 3 cm both ways, close enough for fitted sheets; "close" means within 8 cm, where a stretchy sheet may fit and a tailored one may not. Those thresholds are our own rule of thumb.

**Will it fit:** pick a mattress (or type its size), its depth, and a duvet or flat sheet. A duvet should hang past each edge by at least the mattress depth, or the sides show. A flat sheet needs enough left over to tuck under; we assume a 25 cm (10 in) fold-back at the head and call a tuck under 10 cm (4 in) shallow.

**Why names mislead:** a UK king (150 × 200 cm) is close to a US queen, while a US king is 193 cm wide. Continental Europe names beds by width in centimetres; Australia's queen is 153 cm wide, New Zealand's king about 165 cm. Duvets differ too: German shops sell 135 × 200 cm singles, Swedish ones 150 × 200 cm, and French shops write the same duvet as 220 × 240 or 240 × 220.

**Sizes vary:** standards allow small tolerances, UK sizes are imperial at heart, and every maker cuts bedding a little differently. Use this chart to choose, then check the product's own dimensions.

## Questions

**Is a UK king the same as a US king?**

No. A UK king is 5 ft by 6 ft 6 in, sold as 150 × 200 cm, which is almost exactly a US queen (60 × 80 in). A US king is 76 inches (193 cm) wide, wider than a UK super king. US king sheets will swamp a UK king bed.

**What size is a European double bed?**

Continental Europe sizes beds by width: 140, 160 and 180 cm are the common doubles, usually 200 cm long. France still sells many 140 × 190 cm doubles, and Italy and Spain use 190 cm lengths too. Two single mattresses side by side are common in German-speaking and Nordic countries.

**How much bigger than the mattress should a duvet be?**

Wide enough to cover the sides of the mattress: at least the mattress depth on each side, more if you share it or sleep restlessly. One French guide puts the most you need at 30–40 cm each side. Many people choose one size up from their bed for more drape.

**Will US sheets fit an Australian queen?**

Usually. An Australian queen (153 × 203 cm) is within about a centimetre of a US queen (60 × 80 in, 152 × 203 cm). Check the pocket depth of fitted sheets against your mattress, which is often the bigger difference.

**Why do Japanese bed sizes look different?**

Japan's industrial standard sets beds at 195 cm long, with names like single (97 cm wide), semi-double (122 cm) and double (140 cm). Futon bedding has its own standard, with quilt widths from 135 to 180 cm and lengths of 195 or 210 cm.
